European policy on Key Enabling Technologies (KETs) has been established for several years and has now gained a strong position in European R&D and innovation policy. The role of the creative industry has so far remained underexposed in this policy. The introduction of the concept of 'Key Enabling Methodologies' (KEMs) is a step towards a broader recognition of the contribution that design disciplines can offer to societal challenges. In KEMs, knowledge is distilled and abstracted from specific local designs into generic strategies or process descriptions. At least four different types of KEMs can be distinguished:
  1. Methods to determine direction and design objectives. For example: design for debate.
  2. Methods that help to systematically go through the design process and involve stakeholders. For example: service blueprinting.
  3. Methods that assist in the elaboration and realisation of the solution. For example: virtual simulations.
  4. Methods that support testing and validating an idea or solution. For example: usability testing.
Commissioned by NWO, Dialogic further elaborated on the above inventory of KEMs and authored a whitepaper highlighting the importance of KEMs. The research was carried out simultaneously in Flanders (an interesting starting point here is Flanders District of Creativity). Dialogic collaborated in this with Dr. Walter Ysebaert from Vrije Universiteit Brussel.
