Excellence is a key theme in education. Since 2008, the Platform Beta Techniek has been providing extra stimulation for excellence in higher education through the Sirius Program. Since 2011, excellence has also become part of the policy agendas for primary and secondary education of the Ministry of Education. Starting in 2011, the Platform Beta Techniek initiated the program Beta Excellent (VO) and the 100 School Project (PO) based on these agendas. These programs also focus on the theme of excellence. In 2012, the School aan Zet program was launched for primary and secondary schools. Within School aan Zet, schools work on their own ambitions on various themes. One of these themes is excellence and giftedness. Schools and stakeholders from the earlier programs (Beta Excellent and 100 School Project) expressed a need to identify which students are considered excellent or gifted, what the academic career of these students looks like, and where these students are generally located. To answer the question - who are the excellent students? - the Platform Beta Techniek has commissioned various studies from Dialogic (Triptych Excellence). These studies focus on different characteristics of excellent students, the development these students undergo, and their location within the education system. The main focus of these studies is to identify the top 20% of students in primary and secondary education.
