NEON is a multidisciplinary project aimed at accelerating the energy and mobility transitions through a comprehensive approach that takes into account societal, economic, and technical aspects.
Although often overlooked, standards are an important part of almost every technology we currently use. In the context of the energy transition, standards can prove to be valuable tools in steering technological development: they can indicate that new, green technologies can deliver on their promises while also meeting safety requirements. They can also facilitate the communication of complementary technologies to provide a more complete and seamless functionality. With this in mind, this report examines six technological areas relevant to the transition to energy and mobility to determine their standard requirements and availability. This preliminary analysis thus includes an inventory of the available and required standards in each of these areas.
A follow-up study will delve into ongoing standardization activities at an industrial level to assess the extent to which these standards could support the successful and interoperable implementation of the studied technologies.
