Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has firmly established itself as a general-purpose technology, a technology that dominates the entire economy. Over the past four decades, ICT has brought about profound changes and is expected to continue to do so in the future. However, predicting these changes and anticipating the impact they will have on our society, economy, and culture is difficult.
This notion forms the basis for the motivation to carry out the following study, commissioned by Telefonica Foundation in 2008. The goal of the connected world: how does ICT change our society, culture, and economy? Topics covered in this study include the development of ICT, quantifying progress, and a qualitative evaluation of the possibilities thus far. Additionally, challenges and opportunities for the future are discussed.
