- Since January 2014, graduates from universities of applied sciences (Dutch: hbo) have been granted an internationally recognizable degree addition: bachelor of science/bachelor of arts. This aligns their titling with that of graduates from research universities (Dutch: wo) in foreign countries. Consequently, universities of applied sciences are now permitted to be referred to as ‘universities of applied science’ (UAS) abroad. In English, there is no specific equivalent title for the 'professors' at universities of applied sciences – known as lecturers – as the term 'lector' holds a different specific meaning both in English and German languages.
- Five years following the alignment of titles, the Dutch Minister commissioned Dialogic to evaluate these issues comprehensively. The research encompasses four objectives:
- To ascertain whether the visibility of the quality of education has increased in the hbo sector with the introduction of the degree additions 'of Science' and 'of Arts'.
- To examine whether the distinction between universities of applied sciences (hbo) and research universities (wo) is still clear to Dutch society.
- To assess the international recognizability of the positioning of universities of applied sciences as Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS).
- To evaluate the international recognition of the title ‘lector’.
- The final report of this research will be delivered by the end of May 2020.
