Research on Business Climate for the House of Representatives

For the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, Dialogic investigated the strengths and weaknesses of the Dutch business climate. We not only looked at the climate for foreign companies establishing themselves in the Netherlands (business climate), but also at the investment climate in the Netherlands for all companies. This determines the extent to which it is attractive for the private sector to invest in the Netherlands.

In the analysis, we consistently compared the Netherlands with different competing countries. These include the United States and nine countries in Northwestern Europe. It emerges that in a generic sense, the Dutch investment climate roughly ranks in the top three compared to our top ten competitors. We compete for the top spots with Switzerland, Denmark, and to a lesser extent Sweden. Looking at the three focus areas and eight sub-areas, the position of the Netherlands on these areas varies greatly: sometimes we are leading, sometimes not. The report provides an overview of the strengths and weaknesses of the Netherlands in each area. On average, the Netherlands scores lower in these specific areas than in the generic investment climate. Improvement in the investment climate in focus and sub-areas will need to stem from very specific policies. Further research into specific aspects of a sub-area is required to clarify how the investment climate can be enhanced in that area.

The research report was presented to the House of Representatives on 1 June. Read the relevant Chamber letter here and download the report here.
