For the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, Dialogic investigated the strengths and weaknesses of the Dutch business climate. We not only looked at the climate for foreign companies establishing themselves in the Netherlands (business climate), but also at the investment climate in the Netherlands for all companies. This determines the extent to which it is attractive for the private sector to invest in the Netherlands.
In our analysis, we consistently compared the Netherlands with various competing countries. These include the United States and nine countries in Northwest Europe. It emerges that in a general sense, the Netherlands ranks roughly in the top three in terms of the investment climate compared to our ten main competitors. We compete for top positions with Switzerland, Denmark, and to a lesser extent, Sweden. Looking at the three focus areas and eight sub-areas, it is noticeable that the Netherlands' position varies significantly in these areas: sometimes we are the frontrunner, sometimes not. The report provides an overview of the strengths and weaknesses of the Netherlands per area. Overall, the Netherlands tends to score lower in these specific areas than in the generic investment climate. Improvement in the investment climate in focus and sub-areas will need to arise from very specific policies. Further research into specific aspects of a sub-area is required to clarify how the investment climate can be enhanced.
