Excellence is a key theme in education. Since 2008, the Platform Bèta Techniek has been actively promoting excellence in higher education through the Sirius Program. Since 2011, excellence has also been integrated into the policy agendas for primary and secondary education by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. From these agendas, the Platform Bèta Techniek initiated the Beta Excellence (VO) program and the 100 School Project (PO) in 2011. These programs also pay attention to the theme of excellence. In 2012, the School aan Zet program was launched for primary and secondary schools. Within School aan Zet, schools work towards their own ambitions on various themes. One of those themes is excellence and giftedness. Schools and stakeholders involved in the previous programs (Beta Excellence and 100 School Project) expressed the need to understand which students we are referring to when we talk about excellence or excellent students, what the school career of these students looks like, and where these students are generally located. To answer the question - who are the excellent students? - the Platform Bèta Techniek has commissioned research from Dialogic (Triptych Excellence). These studies focus on different characteristics of excellent students, the development these excellent students undergo, and where these students are situated within the education system. The premise of these studies is to mainly identify the top 20% of students in primary and secondary education. This specific research project is focused on secondary education.
