Frank Bongers, in collaboration with Dries Verlet from Statistiek Vlaanderen, has published an article in the Flemish Journal of Public Management (VTOM, 2020, no. 1, p. 25-34) on the flow of information from research and society to policy in a broader sense. They discuss the rise of a more critical public opinion that increasingly relies on alternative sources (such as social media) and the challenges that governments face in addressing this trend. Furthermore, there is a decreasing trust in experts and a blurring line between lay and expert knowledge. This prompted a working group during the Politicologenetmaal 2019 to focus on how information and policy intersect.

The article provides an overview of various elements that influence the use (or lack thereof) of information in policy-making. It delves into the challenges posed by the evolving types of data and the necessity of an ecosystem for data to reach policymakers.
