The MedTech sector is of great economic importance to the Netherlands, both because of its contribution to exports and its potential to address societal challenges such as aging, the increase in chronic diseases, the rise in healthcare costs, and the growing shortage of personnel in healthcare. Given this importance, MedTech is recognised as a key growth market and is strongly embedded in the national industry and technology policy.
On behalf of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS), Dialogic conducted an inventory study on the Dutch innovation ecosystem surrounding medical technology (MedTech). The objective of the inventory was to map the key public and private players (including companies, knowledge institutions, funders, networks), public-private partnerships, and the strongest technology and application areas for MedTech innovations. A more in-depth analysis was also carried out on eight MedTech sub-ecosystems or regional clusters in the Netherlands. The research utilised desk research, data analysis (PATSTAT, Innovationspotter, and EUDAMED), and validation by experts.
The inventory reveals that the Netherlands has a large network of public and private parties and networks. Strong technology areas include AI & data; imaging & diagnostics; robotics; sensor, wearable and monitoring technology; microsystems, microfluidics & lab-on-chip; additive manufacturing and bioprinting; and semiconductors. In addition, important application areas include AI for diagnosis, medical imaging and decision support; eHealth; wearables; robotic instruments for minimally invasive surgery; regenerative medicine & biomaterials (including bio-implants); and applications for rehabilitation. Most of the identified MedTech applications contribute to one or more of the following areas in the healthcare chain: early diagnosis, minimally invasive technologies, remote care, and personalised healthcare.
Some of the inventory results are also featured on the Zorgvoorinnoveren platform (accessible via this link).
