As a researcher and consultant at Dialogic, I work on complex issues related to innovation and science policy, with a particular interest in biotechnology. Before joining Dialogic in 2025, I obtained a PhD in biomedical sciences from Utrecht University. To enhance my analytical skills in policy-related matters, I also pursued training in policy evaluation at the Universities of Amsterdam and Maastricht during my doctoral studies. Hence, I bring extensive experience in quantitative and qualitative analyses, coupled with unique domain knowledge: having a background as a former scientist, I have an insider's perspective on the practice of science and innovation. This background aligns well with my work at Dialogic, where I apply my scientific expertise in policy practice. During my doctoral research, I discovered a new form of cell death following chemotherapy, which could potentially pave the way for new medications to reduce the side effects of chemotherapy in the long term. Additionally, I closely observed the rapid evolution of biomedical knowledge and technologies, and the significant impact these developments have on society, particularly in healthcare. Consider CRISPR, for instance, a biotechnology that enables rapid and relatively simple genetic alterations. This technique is already leading to new therapies for cancer and genetic diseases, while raising fundamental ethical questions. Do we want to permit genetic modifications in embryos, and what are the societal implications? Similar issues arise with technologies such as AI, social media, and neurotechnology. The interplay between technological progress and ethical considerations greatly intrigues and motivates me to investigate the impact of science, technology, and innovation on society.
