On behalf of the European Commission, the European Service Innovation Centre (ESIC) was launched a few months ago. This centre focuses on how policymakers can harness the 'transformative power of service innovation' to reform their economic structure and strengthen their innovation system. Dialogic is one of the partners in the consortium implementing ESIC activities.

Since the official kick-off in Belfast, much has happened. Apart from developing an initial version of the European Service Innovation Scoreboard and launching a website and newsletter, the centre has also started visiting and exploring six demonstration regions. On behalf of Dialogic, Matthijs Janssen and Pim den Hertog traveled to Linz, Austria in June, along with Jari Kuusisto (European Touch), to examine the innovation system of the Oberösterreich region.

The economy of Oberösterreich is characterised by a strong presence of manufacturing industry. Through a combination of desk research and twelve on-site interviews, the ESIC team investigated the weaknesses in the regional innovation system. It was then determined how a greater focus on innovative services can address these issues, and how existing technological competencies can be better utilised. A thorough analysis of the policy mix provided insights for concrete strategies.

The report has now been completed and Dialogic has presented it to the European Commission. Following Oberösterreich, reports will also be published on five other regions. One of these regions, where Dialogic is also involved, is the Province of Limburg. The kick-off for the start of this analysis took place on 17 June.
