The broadband market for Dutch households is still very much in motion. Almost two-thirds of the Dutch population spends over an hour online at home on a daily basis. What does this home user do and want online? Does internet usage change as their connection becomes broader? To what extent is there a shift towards mobile internet? What significance does the internet have for the user? These are the questions at the heart of the fifth edition of the Broadband and the User study.
Commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, UPC, and the Stimuleringsfonds voor de Pers, Dialogic investigates what the 'average' Dutch household was doing online in 2010. How do internet users gather information for personal purposes, how do they communicate with others, to what extent is the internet used for entertainment, and which transactions (online purchases, internet banking) are conducted online?
So Broadband and the User explores Dutch internet usage in its entirety. Additionally, it provides insight from a user perspective into the changes that are emerging in internet usage. As this is the fifth iteration of the study, changes can be consistently mapped over a period of almost ten years. New in this edition are the questions related to mobile internet usage.
The questionnaire will be available online until January 2010. A diary study will take place in February 2010, and a user meeting will be held in March 2010. The diary study will present participants with a statement or question daily for them to answer in their own words. At the user meeting, internet users will engage in discussions. Through this approach, Broadband and the User aims to uncover the significance that internet users attribute to the internet. The results of the study will be publicly released in April 2010.
