Meet Matthijs
As Dialogic's Principal Scientist, I am primarily involved in developing new theories, concepts, and methods in the field of innovation policy and strategy. The projects I contribute to, often in the role of 'scientific conscience', typically involve evaluations or advice on the implementation of policy measures. A key driver for me is exploring how government policy can ensure that public and private knowledge development/exchange and investments contribute to sustainability and societal well-being. Since 2021, I have investigated this in nearly 100 studies. Typical clients include the Ministries of Economic Affairs and Climate, Education, Culture & Science, Finance, Infrastructure & Water Management, as well as the European Commission, OECD, and regional governments. The research methods I employ are both qualitative and quantitative in nature. In addition to my work at Dialogic, I have been an assistant professor at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development (Utrecht University) since 2016. My appointment followed my MSc studies and doctoral research in the field of innovation sciences (Eindhoven University of Technology) and a post-doc at the Center for International Development (Harvard Kennedy School for Public Policy). I currently supervise around 8 PhD candidates and regularly contribute to training programmes for policy professionals. I also coordinate the Mission-oriented Innovation Policy Observatory. As an experienced researcher and evaluator in the field of innovation policy, I frequently participate in advisory boards, expert groups, and scientific committees. Examples include the expert groups for 'Evaluation of system/transitional policies' (Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate) and for 'Fair and Sustainable Economy' (EU Joint Research Centre), as well as the advisory board of the Knowledge and Innovation Agenda 'Societal Value Creation'.
