Since September of last year, Dialogic has been conducting a monitor on the Sustainable Employability of ICT professionals. The monitor is made possible through funding from the European Social Fund of the European Union. As part of the monitor, between July and September, Conclusr conducted a survey among 1,500 ICT professionals and 500 companies with ICT employees. In this survey, ICT professionals and companies were asked about the effects of the COVID-19 measures on work and the company.

The survey reveals that the COVID-19 measures have a limited impact on the work of ICT professionals. The vast majority of employees are motivated, have a good workspace at home and manage to structure their day. However, ICT professionals seem to struggle with communication with colleagues. More than 30% of ICT professionals communicate less effectively due to the use of different communication channels. A similar percentage experience less job satisfaction because they have to communicate in other ways. Interestingly, a small percentage (7%) of ICT professionals actually derive more enjoyment from different communication methods.

The survey also shows a correlation between the effectiveness of communication and job satisfaction due to the different way of communicating. Among ICT professionals who find communication less effective, more than half also report experiencing less job satisfaction. In the group of ICT professionals who do not find communication less effective, this figure is 20%. The majority in this group do not notice a difference in job satisfaction (69%).

ICT professionals were asked about their fear of losing their job. Generally, ICT professionals are not worried about losing their jobs due to the COVID-19 crisis. In fact, 84% of ICT professionals indicate that they are not afraid of losing their job ('not at all' or 'not'). 7% of ICT professionals are concerned about this ('yes' or 'to a great extent'). The rest are neutral about this or do not know how worried they are about keeping their job. Some breakdowns were made to see which ICT professionals are most concerned about retaining their job. ICT professionals aged 55 or older generally worry most about losing their jobs (9%), although the percentages across different age categories are not far apart.

Looking at the type of employment contract, there is a slightly clearer difference in the level of concern among ICT professionals about keeping their job. ICT professionals working as freelancers (ZZP'ers) are more likely to fear losing their jobs (13%). ICT professionals with a permanent employment relationship are less concerned.
