On 15th February, Dialogic organized a Smart Cities masterclass for second-year level 4 ICT students from the ICT College ROC Midden Nederland.
First, the students received a crash course on smart cities, after which they got the opportunity to get hands-on. Initially, they mapped out innovative smart city applications from different major cities in the Netherlands. Subsequently, the students had the chance to develop their own smart city application. This application was required to offer a clever solution to the following problem: how can we improve bicycle flow in Utrecht and prevent congestion at traffic lights?
The outcome: four creative solutions were devised, utilising lasers, sensors, smartphones, or smart bike lights that communicate with Utrecht's traffic light systems to map out bicycle flows. Based on this data, traffic lights can be controlled (e.g. longer green light for high volumes of cyclists) or peak routes can be alleviated (alternative route calculation based on real-time traffic information).
This masterclass serves as the launch of a learning-work trajectory where Dialogic will provide intensive guidance to a selection of students as part of the ICT Lab Utrecht initiative. Within this project, Dialogic collaborates with ROC Midden Nederland to enhance the connection to the broader job market outside the ICT sector.
The objectives of the ICT Lab Utrecht are twofold: firstly, (1) to facilitate the learning and working of MBO students in a business environment on current ICT-related topics stemming from the evolving role of ICT in the economy. Additionally, the ICT Lab Utrecht (2) provides an accessible development/testing/R&D environment for SMEs and other commercial entities in the Utrecht region.
